The epitaph of the legendary lover Casanova says…

“I have lived as a philosopher and die as a Christian.”

Casanova died as … what? He started life with the intent to become a minister and ended up one of the most notorious erotic figures in history. Other than exhaustion, what happened?

Suspended from seminary for “scandalous conduct, drinking, and numerous love affairs,” he became a spy, politician, diplomat, writer, artist, violinist, and, yes, at times, a clergyman. He helped legalize the lottery, too.

He wrote about God, “I have never doubted Him (and) always counted on His providence, turning to Him through… prayer… and finding my entreaties always answered.” He never saw past his own contradictions. His beliefs were orthodox but divorced from the practices of his everyday life.

The Bible says, “Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Poor self-deceived Casanova! It would have been far better if he had died and lived as a Christian.
