As in Emerson, that is. Ralph Waldo Emerson, the oft quoted American poet, lecturer, philosopher and minister. He grew up in an orthodox Christian home, the son of a preacher. He even went to Harvard Divinity School.

He once said, “The faith that stands on authority is not faith. “ And he would know. He finally rejected the deity of Christ, the authority and inerrancy of the Bible, and became a Unitarian.

Positively quoting this man is a bit like endorsing Judas. He rejected the faith once delivered to the saints, yet is quoted authoritatively in Christian sermons across the land. He had a beautiful, but poisonous, way with words causing many to turn from the saving Gospel. A word not often used by the modern church serves as a fitting epitaph for him: Heretic.

To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson… on second thought, I won’t.

In the light of eternity, what will they put on your tombstone?
