The late George Carlin

The late George Carlin

Comedian George Carlin recently died. A cultural commentator, jester and religious cynic, he helped define modern comedy. Known for liberal use of profanity, he prompted a Supreme Court decision about obscenity known as The 7 Words You Can’t Say On TV.

It’s bad form to say them off TV, too.

Carlin mocked the faith of anyone who believed in what he called “the sky god.” Of Jesus, he said, “I finally accepted Jesus — not as my personal savior, but as a man I intend to borrow money from.”

Looking at Creation, he said of his Creator, “If this is the best God can do, I’m not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of (stuff) you’d expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently-run universe, this guy would’ve been out on his all-powerful (rear-end) a long time ago.”

Many tried to share the Gospel with Carlin but he bitterly mocked them away. I would never presume to be his judge. Before he died, I hope he clearly understood that there are 7 Words You Can’t Say In The Afterlife. They are:

Jesus, I am a sinner. Save me.

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” Hebrews 9:27.
